This was our first road trip through the Western U.S. and Canada in many years. It was a great adventure for the three of us, including Timmy the dog, and a celebration of our 45th wedding anniversary. All told we drove about 4,300 miles in a counter-clockwise loop that began and ended at home in Sausalito, California and passed through parts of Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Alberta, British Columbia, and Washington.
Day 1, stayed with Boots and Helen Harmon in Reno, Nevada.
Day 2, overnight in Salt Lake City, Utah, where we enjoyed a nice Croatian dinner.
Day 3, overnight in Riverton, Wyoming, were we attended a genuine Indian Pow Wow.
Day 4-6, spent with Beth Garbutt and John Bredehoeft at their riverside Summer home in Storey, Wyoming.
Day 7-9, traversed the acclaimed Beartooth Scenic Highway to Red Lodge, Montana, and hung out with George and Paula Clow and their extended family.
Day 10, overnight in Great Falls, Montana; the falls are no longer the way Lewis & Clark saw them.
Day 11,
overnight in Calgary, Alberta, where everyone seemed to be dressed as cowboys for the famous Stampede.
Day 12-14, spent at Lake Louise in Banff National Park. Our room at the Chateau looked out on this view.
Day 15-17, spent in Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, visiting some of its 116 wineries.
Day 18, overnight north of Seattle where we ate the trip’s most memorable meal.
Day 19, our longest day, 827 miles and 14 hours, arriving home a day earlier than planned.
Some of our many planned and unplanned adventures are captured in the pictures to follow, such as two Fourth of July parades, a pig race (our pig won us $25!), a rodeo, a polo match, and several all-day mountain hikes. Everything considered -seeing good friends, enjoying breathtaking scenery, an indulging ourselves with an uninterrupted program of fine dining – this was a very successful trip.
